The ReSOURCE mission

Less Waste – More Opportunity

For a quarter-century, ReSOURCE VT has contributed to the quality of life for all Vermonters — even those who may have never known they were there. The various activities of ReSOURCE serve to greatly reduce the stream of waste that would otherwise go directly to landfill, through their recycling and re-use of household goods, appliances, furniture, construction materials, and more. Much of the diverted material is made available to the public again through Resource’s retail centers in Burlington, Hyde Park, and Barre.

YouthBuilders

And that's just the beginning. In addition to helping us all live lighter on the Earth, ReSOURCE has offered training programs and partnerships through organizations such as Reach Up, and through their own LEAP, YouthBuild, and Career Start programs, to help train Vermonters to be self-supporting and improve their employment opportunities.

What makes Barre special?

ReSOURCE's Barre facility, located at 30 Granite Street, takes the recycle-reuse concept one step farther. Roughly once a month, their retail selling floor is cleared and “reused” as Central Vermont’s newest and most unique performance venue. The Flying Stage (named for the fact that the stage itself is hoisted up into the rafters overhead between performances) has hosted a rich and varied roster of exciting performances, and takes its place as a signature component of the broader re-vitalization of downtown Barre.

The Flying Stage and its “ReSPACE” within the ReSOURCE-Barre retail center came about with the partnership, direction, and underwriting contributions of Diana Levine, owner/operator of Re-Bop Records (based in Marshfield). The actual construction was carried out with a team from the YouthBuild program, and a small army of community volunteers.

It is great fun to see the re-use and training operations in the facility by day and the music and performances at night, and to think how together we transformed this dilapidated building and turned it into such an incredible community asset.  —Thomas Longstreth, Executive Director
